Is There Such A Thing As A Healthy Kibble?
One of the most common questions I get asked is: “Is there such a thing as a healthy kibble?” It’s a great question—and one that deserves a thoughtful answer.
As a canine nutritionist who supports an evolutionary, species-appropriate raw diet, I always strive to provide honest, science-backed insights to help you make the best choices for your dog. So let’s dive into the truth about kibble and why, despite some improvements in the pet food industry, I don’t recommend it as the foundation of your dog’s diet.
1. Too Many Carbs, Too Little Benefit
Most kibble formulas are loaded with carbohydrates—think corn, wheat, rice, or potatoes. While these ingredients help bind the kibble together and keep costs down, they don’t serve much purpose in your dog’s nutrition. Dogs have no biological requirement for carbohydrates, and excess carbs can lead to weight gain, blood sugar imbalances, and even chronic inflammation over time.
2. Highly Processed = Nutrient Loss
To create kibble, ingredients are subjected to intense heat and pressure. Unfortunately, this process destroys many essential nutrients—especially enzymes, amino acids, and heat-sensitive vitamins. What’s left is a product that may meet minimal standards on paper but falls short when it comes to nourishing your dog on a cellular level.
3. Artificial Additives and Preservatives
To extend shelf life and meet nutritional targets, many kibble brands add synthetic vitamins, minerals, and preservatives. These additives may check boxes on a label, but they’re often less bioavailable (i.e., harder for your dog’s body to absorb and use) than the naturally occurring nutrients found in fresh, raw food.
4. Where’s the Freshness?
Unlike a raw diet that features whole foods—meat, organs, bones, and vegetables—kibble often includes rendered meats and meat by-products. These ingredients are far removed from the fresh, nutrient-rich foods your dog’s ancestors thrived on. Fresh, unprocessed foods simply provide more vitality and nourishment.
5. Digestive Health Matters
Kibble is dry, low in moisture, and can be tough on your dog’s digestive system. Over time, this may lead to issues like bloating, gas, constipation, or even dental problems. In contrast, raw diets support digestion naturally with moisture-rich foods and enzymes that promote a healthy gut.
6. Glyphosate: A Hidden Danger
Many grains and legumes used in kibble are treated with glyphosate, a widely used herbicide that has been linked to a number of health concerns—from gut microbiome disruption to immune dysfunction. Even trace amounts can build up over time and affect your dog’s well-being.
So… Is There Any Healthy Kibble?
While some premium kibbles use better ingredients and avoid artificial additives, the fact remains: kibble, by its very nature, is a processed product that doesn’t align with your dog’s biological needs. The closer we can get to feeding dogs fresh, whole, species-appropriate foods, the better their chances of living a long, healthy, vibrant life.
