Chemically Treated Lawns and Dogs: Why a Species-Appropriate Lifestyle Goes Beyond the Food Bowl
When most people think about improving their dog's health, they naturally focus on nutrition—and that's exactly where they should begin.

A truly species-appropriate lifestyle also considers everything your dog encounters every single day—including the grass beneath their paws.
Your Dog's Environment Matters
Dogs don't simply walk across the grass.
They sniff it.
They roll in it.
They lie in it.
They lick their paws afterward.
Unlike us, dogs experience their environment through their entire body. That means substances applied to lawns can be absorbed through the paw pads and skin, inhaled while sniffing close to the ground, or ingested during normal grooming behavior.
For many dogs, these exposures happen multiple times every day.
What Does the Research Say?
Several studies have investigated the relationship between lawn herbicides and canine health.
One of the most frequently cited studies found that dogs exposed to households using 2,4-D herbicides had a significantly higher risk of developing malignant lymphoma compared to dogs living in homes where these herbicides were not used.
Additional research from Purdue University demonstrated that certain lawn herbicides could be detected in dogs' urine after lawn applications, confirming that dogs are exposed to these chemicals during routine outdoor activities.
It's important to understand what these studies do—and do not—show.
They do not suggest that every lawn product causes cancer or that every chemically treated lawn is equally hazardous. Rather, they highlight that exposure to certain herbicides may contribute to increased disease risk, adding to a dog's overall toxic burden over time.

Modern dogs encounter far more chemicals than their ancestors ever did.
